Marissa Ambrosio is a senior program specialist with the Institute for Intergovernmental Research (IIR). She is currently a member of the Criminal Justice Initiatives (CJI) team and supports the U.S. Department of Justice’s Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Training and Technical Assistance Program. In this role, Ms. Ambrosio provides technical assistance services to more than 20 state and local jurisdictions as well as community organizations in their efforts to prevent and respond to hate crimes; develops program communications, products, and resources; conducts research, data collection, and analysis of best practices; and creates, maintains, and delivers dashboards for the programs use.
Before joining IIR, Ms. Ambrosio worked as a senior data analyst at the Florida Department of Corrections. In that role, she worked with statistical software to create and maintain data sets of multiple sizes to provide clients with reports. These reports, which typically involved subject areas like inmate education, health, and recidivism, were often complex and long-term. In addition to producing data sets and generating reports, Ms. Ambrosio created multiple dashboards for internal clients; these dashboards typically involved creating visualizations of data sets that spanned multiple years to examine a variety of variables.
Ms. Ambrosio began her career at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, where she held positions in the Firearm Purchase Program and the Florida Statistical Analysis Center. Her duties in these positions included recording and analyzing data, working with a variety of team members on various program projects, and learning data visualization software to create dashboards for the organization as a whole.
Ms. Ambrosio earned a master of science degree in criminology and bachelor of science degrees in criminology and sociology from Florida State University.
