Judge Robert J. Cindrich brings more than five decades of distinguished legal, judicial, and corporate leadership experience to his work as President of Cindrich Consulting, LLC, where he advises healthcare organizations and public and private business corporations. He also maintains an active arbitration and mediation practice and continues to handle select matters on a pro bono basis.
Judge Cindrich’s career spans public service, private legal practice, the federal judiciary, and senior corporate leadership. He began his legal career as United States Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania from 1978 to 1981, and went on to serve as Managing Partner of the Pittsburgh law firm Cindrich & Titus from 1981 to 1994. In 1994, he was appointed to the federal bench, serving as a United States District Court Judge for the Western District of Pennsylvania until 2004.
Following his judicial service, Judge Cindrich transitioned to corporate leadership at UPMC, one of the nation’s leading integrated health care delivery and financing systems, where he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer from 2004 to 2011 and subsequently as Senior Advisor to the Office of the President from 2011 to 2012. He went on to serve as Interim General Counsel of U.S. Steel Corporation from 2012 to 2013.
Judge Cindrich has held numerous corporate board positions, including service on the boards of directors of Mylan N.V. (NASDAQ: MYL) from 2011 to 2020, Allscripts Healthcare Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ: MDRX) from 2012 to 2015, and Zapproved, Inc. from 2011 to 2013.
His civic and philanthropic leadership includes service as Chair of the Board of Directors of South Side Hospital from 1992 to 2006, member and Chair of the Audit Committee of the UPMC Board of Directors from 2001 to 2004, member of the Board of Directors of UPMC Passavant Hospital from 2000 to 2002, and member of the Board of Directors of UPMC Mercy Hospital. He has also served as Chair and CEO of 21st Century Biodefense, Inc.; Chair of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law Board of Visitors; Chair of the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution; Trustee of the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission; a member of the Board of Directors of the Make-A-Wish Foundation; Chair of the Pennsylvania Legislative Reapportionment Commission; and Chair of Meadowcroft Village. He currently serves on the Executive Committee of The Article III Coalition.
Judge Cindrich earned his Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1968, and his A.B. in History and Political Science from Wittenberg University in 1965.
The effort to eradicate hate requires the active participation of every component of our society, to include governments, the private sector, communities of faith and indeed every aspect of civil society. There is no more urgent task in front of us. The organizers of the Eradicate Hate Global Summit are doing the United States and the world an enormous service by tackling hatred and extremism with a focus on honest dialogue and conversation, genuine learning and practical solutions. This will not happen overnight, but the Pittsburgh community’s leadership in this effort is genuinely inspiring and motivating.
