Product Public Policy lead, YouTube

2022

Lucy is YouTube’s Product Public Policy lead for EMEA.  In this role, she advises YouTube on product policy implications including content issues relating to online content regulation and the policy areas of hate speech, terrorism and violent extremism. She also leads YouTube’s work with GIFCT, for which YouTube is the Executive Operating Board Chair for 2022, and other multilateral fora focused on fighting terrorism and hate speech in the online space.  Before joining Google at the beginning of 2020, Lucy was the Deputy Director for Online Policy in the UK Home Office. Lucy has held other positions working for the UK Government including advisory roles to UK Government Minsters in the Home Office and Ministry of Defence as well as policy roles in Defence and the Cabinet Office, covering national security and counter-terrorism issues. Lucy holds a BSc in Psychology and MSc in Critical and Major Incident Psychology.

The effort to eradicate hate requires the active participation of every component of our society, to include governments, the private sector, communities of faith and indeed every aspect of civil society. There is no more urgent task in front of us. The organizers of the Eradicate Hate Global Summit are doing the United States and the world an enormous service by tackling hatred and extremism with a focus on honest dialogue and conversation, genuine learning and practical solutions. This will not happen overnight, but the Pittsburgh community’s leadership in this effort is genuinely inspiring and motivating.
