2024

Professor Critchlow is a professor emeritus at Gonzaga University School of Law in Spokane, Washington, where he taught a diverse range of law courses for many years. Beyond the classroom, Critchlow is an accomplished trial lawyer, boasting extensive experience in civil and criminal litigation, including appearances in state courts, federal courts, and the Supreme Court of the United States.

He has taught international human rights law and provided consultancy on legal education curricula and teaching techniques across Europe, South America, and the Middle East.

Critchlow played a pivotal role in founding the Gonzaga Institute for Action Against Hate, now known as the Gonzaga Center for the Study of Hate. This interdisciplinary center focuses on understanding the roots of hatred and developing strategies to combat it.

Additionally, Critchlow founded and edited the Institute’s peer-reviewed Journal of Hate Studies, a digital journal that publishes rigorous academic discussions on the subject of hate, serving as an essential resource for scholars, policymakers, and activists.

The effort to eradicate hate requires the active participation of every component of our society, to include governments, the private sector, communities of faith and indeed every aspect of civil society. There is no more urgent task in front of us. The organizers of the Eradicate Hate Global Summit are doing the United States and the world an enormous service by tackling hatred and extremism with a focus on honest dialogue and conversation, genuine learning and practical solutions. This will not happen overnight, but the Pittsburgh community’s leadership in this effort is genuinely inspiring and motivating.
