Eradicate Hate:
2021

Andrea Lampros is the Associate Director at the Human Rights Center and the co-founder and resiliency manager of the Human Rights Center Investigations Lab. She helps to lead the center’s work at the intersection of journalism and human rights and directs communications and media. She is also an instructor at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. In fall 2016, Andrea joined Alexa Koenig in co-founding the Human Rights Center Investigations Lab, which trains and mobilizes students to conduct digital human rights investigations for advocacy, law and media.  She provides training on resiliency and secondary trauma to students at UC Berkeley and other UC campuses, as well as to journalists and human rights professionals.  Prior to joining the Human Rights Center, she worked on grassroots efforts related to U.S. policy in Central America and immigrant and refugee rights. An alumna of Berkeley’s J-School, she spent more than a decade working as a newspaper reporter, magazine editor and freelance writer for publications in California. She contributed a chapter about the labor movement to The Real Las Vegas: Life Beyond the Strip (Oxford University Press, 1997) co-wrote a chapter for Silent Witness about the use of DNA in El Salvador’s search for disappeared children (Oxford University Press, 2020), and is working with Alexa Koenig on Graphic (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming) about reactions to traumatic content.

The Summit was more than empty words – it made clear that a solution-driven approach is the only way to fight hate. That’s why the working group activities, which are results driven are going to be critical in defeating violent extremism. The Summit brought together the best minds in government, private sector, academia, and civil society. Being surrounded by these experts sparked new ideas – some of which I’ve already implemented or have written about.
