Dr. Aaron Skrbin is a safety, security, and emergency management professional with nearly three decades of experience in education, public safety, and crisis leadership. He serves as Director of Safety and Security for the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU), a position he was appointed to in October 2019 as the organization’s first individual to hold the role.
Dr. Skrbin began his career as a social studies teacher in the Woodland Hills School District in 1997 before transitioning into school administration in 2002. Over the next two decades, he served as a middle and high school administrator in the Woodland Hills, Chartiers Valley, and South Fayette Township School Districts. At South Fayette, he was appointed Director of Safety and Security in 2012 while concurrently serving as a building administrator and was later named High School Principal in 2015. Following the passage of Pennsylvania Act 44 of 2018, he was designated the district’s Safety and Security Coordinator and Safe2Say Something Team Lead.
At the AIU, Dr. Skrbin oversees safety, security, training, and compliance across AIU facilities and supports schools throughout Allegheny County and beyond as a trainer, consultant, and advocate. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was appointed Pandemic Response Coordinator in March 2020. He established the region’s first mutual aid group focused on school crisis response, serves as the school representative to the Allegheny County Emergency Operations Center, and has participated in multiple Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) school safety subcommittees. He also created and co-chairs the Pennsylvania Association of Intermediate Units (PAIU) School Safety and Security Coordinators Job-Alike Group.
Dr. Skrbin’s contributions to school safety have received national and statewide recognition. In 2024, he was named Runner-Up for National K-12 Safety Director of the Year by Campus Safety Magazine. In 2020, he received the President’s Award for Contributions to School Safety Leadership from the Pennsylvania Association of School Resource Officers (PASRO).
Professionally, Dr. Skrbin serves as 2nd Vice President of PASRO and Vice President of the National Council of School Safety Directors.
Dr. Skrbin holds a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Social Studies Education from Duquesne University, a Master of Public Management from Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College, and a Doctorate of Education from Liberty University.
The effort to eradicate hate requires the active participation of every component of our society, to include governments, the private sector, communities of faith and indeed every aspect of civil society. There is no more urgent task in front of us. The organizers of the Eradicate Hate Global Summit are doing the United States and the world an enormous service by tackling hatred and extremism with a focus on honest dialogue and conversation, genuine learning and practical solutions. This will not happen overnight, but the Pittsburgh community’s leadership in this effort is genuinely inspiring and motivating.
