Invent2Prevent

Program Overview

Invent2Prevent (I2P) is an innovative, experiential learning program that challenges high school and college students to design, implement, and measure the success of a unique initiative, product, or tool that addresses acts of targeted violence, hate crimes, or terrorism in their specific communities. The Department of Homeland Security’s Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (CP3) recognizes the value of the I2P program and has provided full program funding to the Eradicate Hate Global Summit, EdVenture Partners, and Credence Management Solutions to guide, coach, and support teams throughout the program period.

Invent2Prevent projects aim to:

  1. MOTIVATE or EMPOWER a defined target audience to become involved in preventing targeted violence, terrorism, and hate crimes.
  2. LEVERAGE social media or digital platforms to drive rich engagement with a target audience and catalyze a network to get involved in preventing targeted violence and terrorism.
  3. PROPOSE a product, tool, or initiative with a strong call to action to prevent targeted violence, terrorism, and hate crimes.
  4. OPTIMIZE the sustainability and scalability of the project to continue its progression and evolution beyond the program term.

Invent2Prevent follows a public health approach to preventing targeted violence, terrorism, and hate crimes. Teams are challenged to consider not only how they might prevent targeted violence, terrorism, and/or hate crimes, but also how to empower positive messaging that advocates for something, such as community connectedness, inclusivity, mentorship, or the accessibility of prosocial activities. Projects build evidence-informed solutions that address targeted violence through a strengths-based approach that bolsters protective factors.

Nationwide Reach

Since Invent2Prevent’s inception in Spring 2021, more than 1,200 students have participated. One hundred and thirty-eight high school programs have been formed across 26 states. I2P programs have also taken place at 119 colleges and universities in 32 states, including six HBCUs and 11 universities serving majority Black and Brown populations.

Sustainment Program

The I2P Sustainment Program serves as an incubator for promising I2P collegiate projects. Following their initial I2P semester, top-performing teams can participate in Sustainment, during which they receive an additional year of mentorship and $10,000 in seed funding to scale and sustain their projects long-term.

Many I2P teams successfully leverage their sustainment year to grow their class projects into fully-fledged organizations. To date, 13 teams have participated in the I2P Sustainment Program. So far, four of those teams have secured a total of approximately $1.9 million in long-term funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
